From Passau to Arnhem

When we talk about the Danube or the Rhine, both rivers have a special meaning for everyone. Not just because of their length but mostly for their natural beauty and the interesting places to moor up along Europe’s two main arteries. The rivers are connected by the Main-Danube Canal and the narrow River Main. On the first day you will travel by luxury coach to South Germany where you will have dinner and stay overnight in a four star hotel. Then on the second day it’s only a few hours’ drive to Passau (Lindau) where you will be welcomed aboard the Rembrandt van Rijn before lunch.

Wednesday July 24: Arnhem - Wirges – South Germany (coach transfer)

We depart Arnhem at 09:00. If desired we can arrange a hotel for you in Arnhem so you can be sure you will be on time. On the way to our hotel in South Germany we will stop in Wirges for lunch. We will also provide you with a cup of coffee at various times on the journey. You will have dinner in the hotel.

Thursday July 25: South Germany – coach transfer Passau (Lindau)

After enjoying a delicious breakfast at your leisure, the coaches will be ready again. It’s a short drive to Passau (Lindau) where you will be welcomed on board the Rembrandt van Rijn by the crew before lunch. After boarding we will sail to the quayside in Passau. You will have plenty of time for the rest of the day to see the Altstadt (Old Town) which is encircled by three rivers.

Friday July 26: Passau – Regensburg

We set sail from Passau during the night. When you get up for breakfast you will see that you are in the stunning Danube Valley. The wooded hillsides with the occasional castle provide a wonderful panorama. We will arrive in Regensburg early in the afternoon. This Celtic settlement features numerous authentic buildings. The Gothic St. Peter’s Cathedral has impressive stained glass windows.

Saturday July 27: Regensburg - Riedenburg - Mühlhausen

In the afternoon we will moor up at the lovely village of Riedenburg. You can admire beautiful crystals and gems in the Kristallmuseum. At the end of the afternoon we set sail via the Main-Danube Canal for Mühlhausen where we will stay overnight.

Sunday July 28: Mühlhausen - Nuremburg

During our second day on the imposing Main-Danube Canal we will sail over the highest navigable point in Europe. On arrival in Nuremburg you can make use of the free bus transfer to the centre. In Nuremburg’s Altstadt you will find numerous sights including the Kaiserburg castle and various Gothic churches such as the Lorenzkirche, Sebalduskirche and Frauenkirche.

Monday July 29: Nuremburg - Bamberg

Bamberg is a town you will never forget. The old centre is, in a single word, unique. This means it is definitely worth using the free bus transfer which will take you to the centre of Bamberg. There is so much to see in this old town which is more than a thousand years old, that you will need to allow plenty of time for it. The former fishing settlement of Bamberg is also known as ‘Little Venice’ due to its position on the Main and Regnitz rivers.

Tuesday July 30: Bamberg - Schweinfurt

We are now on the River Main and we’ll arrive in Schweinfurt after lunch. You can take a look at the old centre or go for a walk along the promenade beside the Main. You will actually be walking along an old towpath where in olden times the boats were towed upstream by horses.

Wednesday July 31: Schweinfurt - Würzburg

By the time you are awake we will already have passed through several locks. These locks are indispensable as the Main has a steep decline. We will moor in Würzburg during the afternoon, where you can take part in a city walking tour(*).

Thursday August 1: Würzburg - Marktheidenfeld

We continue upstream to our next destination: the small picturesque town of Marktheidenfeld. Beautiful half-timbered houses, romantic alleyways and the idyllic Main Promenade are the main features of this hospitable town.

Friday August 2: Marktheidenfeld - Wertheim

The former Wertheim residence at the mouth of the River Tauber is our goal for today.

Saturday August 3: Wertheim - Aschaffenburg

Aschaffenburg lies at the foot of the Spessart hills. Views of the town are dominated by the imposing Schloss Johannisburg castle.

Sunday August 4: Aschaffenburg - Rüdesheim

We take our leave of the River Main at Mainz and we are back on the Rhine. During the course of the afternoon we will moor in the lively town of Rüdesheim. You can take part in a tour of the vineyards(*), after which you will be dropped off in the centre to discover Rüdesheim at your own pace. A walk along the world-famous Drosselgasse is something not to be missed during your visit to Rüdesheim.

Monday August 5: Rüdesheim - Cologne

The ‘Romantic Rhine’, the most beautiful section of the Rhine is on the program for today. We’ll pass by the famous Lorelei, the subject of the famous legend: the singing legend of the Rhine.
