Tuesday August 11:
Arnhem - Wirges – Southern Germany (coach transfer)
We depart Arnhem at 09:00. If desired we can arrange a hotel for you in Arnhem so you can be sure you will be on time. On the way to our hotel in Southern Germany we will stop in Wirges for lunch. We will also provide you with a cup of coffee at various times on the journey. You will have dinner in the hotel.
Wednesday August 12:
Southern Germany – coach transfer Passau (Lindau) – Vienna
After enjoying a delicious breakfast at your leisure, the coaches will be waiting for you. It’s a short drive to Passau (Lindau) where you will be welcomed on board the Rembrandt van Rijn by the crew before lunch. After boarding we weigh anchor and set sail along a beautiful route through the Wachau valley towards the world-famous cultural city of Vienna. You can enjoy the wonderful countryside and picturesque villages from the sun deck.
Thursday August 13:
Vienna - Melk
We will arrive in Vienna during breakfast. We will stay moored in Vienna today until late in the evening. You have the choice of exploring the city by yourself or taking part in an interesting excursion to the Schönbrunn(*)Palace or a city tour(*). In the evening you will have the opportunity to attend a unique concert(*). We will leave Vienna at around midnight and sail to Melk.
Friday August 14:
Melk - Passau
When we arrive in Melk you will have the opportunity to visit the world-famous Baroque monastery(*).You can learn about Austria’s history during a walk around the centre of this picturesque place of pilgrimage. During lunch we continue our journey to Passau where we will arrive the following morning.
Saturday August 15:
Passau - Regensburg
Passau was once a Celtic settlement. The lovely Altstadt (Old Town) is bordered by three rivers and is a feast for the eye. Towards the end of the afternoon we will sail through the beautiful Danube Valley to Regensburg. The wooded hillsides with the occasional fortress offer wonderful panoramas.
Sunday August 16:
Regensburg - Riedenburg
We will arrive in Regensburg, one of the oldest towns in Germany, during breakfast. The city view is dominated by red roofs, towers and churches from the Middle Ages. The Steinere Brücke (Stone Bridge), St. Peter’s Cathedral and the Porta Praetoria are all buildings you really should see. The centre is also home to various shopping streets and lively street cafes. During lunch we set sail for Riedenburg where we will arrive during the evening.
Monday August 17:
Riedenburg - Nuremburg
We will stay in the delightful town of Riedenburg until lunchtime. You can view beautiful crystals and gemstones in the Kristallmuseum. After we leave Riedenburg we will enter the Main-Danube Canal and pass through the highest navigable point in Europe. We will arrive in Nuremburg just after midnight.
Tuesday August 18:
Nuremburg - Bamberg
in Nuremburg you can make use of the free bus transfer(*) to the centre. In Nuremburg’s Altstadt you will find numerous sights including the Kaiserburg castle and various Gothic churches such as the Lorenzkirche, Sebalduskirche and Frauenkirche.
Wednesday August 19:
Bamberg - Schweinfurt
Bamberg is a town you will never forget. The old centre is, in a single word, unique. This means it is definitely worth using the free bus transfer(*) which will take you to the centre of Bamberg. There is so much to see in this old town which is more than a thousand years old, that you will need to allow plenty of time for it. The former fishing settlement of Bamberg is also known as ‘Little Venice’ due to its position on the Main and Regnitz rivers. After dinner we will arrive in Schweinfurt. You can take a look at the old centre or go for a walk along the promenade beside the Main. You will actually be walking along an old towpath where in olden times the boats were towed upstream by horses.
Thursday August 20:
Schweinfurt - Würzburg
By the time you are awake we will already have passed through several locks. These locks are indispensable as the Main has a steep decline. We will moor in Würzburg during the afternoon, where you can take part in a city walking tour(*).
Friday August 21:
Würzburg - Marktheidenfeld
We continue upstream to our next destination: the small picturesque town of Marktheidenfeld. Beautiful half-timbered houses, romantic alleyways and the idyllic Main Promenade are the main features of this hospitable town.
Saturday August 22:
Marktheidenfeld - Wertheim - Asschaffenburg
The former residence of Wertheim is situated at the mouth of the River Tauber, and this is our destination this morning. At around midday we will sail on to Aschaffenburg which is positioned at the foot of the Spessartgebergte hills. Views of the town are dominated by the imposing Schloss Johannisburg castle.
Sunday August 23:
Asschaffenburg - Rüdesheim
We take our leave of the River Main at Mainz and we are back on the Rhine. During the course of the afternoon we will moor in the lively town of Rüdesheim. You can explore the town centre by yourself or visit(*) the Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet.
Monday August 24:
Rüdesheim - Bonn
The ‘Romantic Rhine’, the most beautiful section of the Rhine is on the programme for today. We’ll pass by the famous Lorelei, the subject of the famous legend: the singing nymph of the Rhine. At the beginning of the afternoon we will arrive in Bonn, the former capital of West Germany. A walk through the city centre will take you past the house where Ludwig van Beethoven was born. A city tour(*) is the ideal way to get to know all that this city has to offer
Tuesday August 25:
Bonn - Arnhem
Without you even noticing it we will sail through the night past Cologne and Düsseldorf to arrive in Arnhem during brunch. Disembarkation will take place at around 11:00. You will take with you wonderful memories of this lovely holiday. Hope to see you again!
During this cruise we will sometimes sail during the night. The first day of this tour is a fully inclusive day by coach.
